A bone fracture is a medical condition in which a bone in the body is cracked or broken due to a traumatic injury or overuse. Fractures result from stress or a high-force impact. The condition may range from minor to severe. Sometimes it may be a result medical conditions that may cause weakening of bones such as osteoporosis.

A bone fracture can be termed as the following:

  • Complete Bone Fracture
  • Partial Bone Fracture

The common causes include sports injury, fall, or accidents. Osteoporosis, a medical condition responsible for thinning of bones is also a reason for bone fracture. Sports personalities and athletes are also prone to bone fractures due to excessive use of injuries.

Types of fractures

Simple Fracture:

This type of fracture occurs when a bone breaks but does not break through the skin.

Open Fracture:

Also known as a compound fracture, this type of fracture occurs when a broken bone protrudes through the skin. Since the fracture is prone to infection, it is important to look for medical treatment without delay.

Greenstick Fracture:

This type of fracture is more common in children and occurs when the bone is partially broken (one side is broken and the other bent), similar to a twig that has been bent but not completely snapped.

Trauma fractures are typically caused by a sudden and severe impact or trauma to the bone. The most common causes of trauma fractures include:

Falls:

Falling from a height, slipping on a surface, or tripping on an object can result in a fracture, particularly in older adults with weakened bones, children, and athletes.

Motor Vehicle Accidents:

Collisions, particularly high-speed crashes, can result in traumatic fractures of the arms, legs, pelvis, and spine.

Sports Injuries:

High-impact sports such as football or basketball can cause traumatic fractures due to collisions with other players or falls.
