What is bursitis?

Kneeling at working or lying on your side at night may increase your risk of knee or hip bursitis, respectively.

Bursitis is a painful condition that occurs when the bursae, small fluid-filled sacs located around the joints, become inflamed. The risk of bursae increases with increased repetitive motion or pressure on joint. Some of the common actions responsible for increasing the risk of bursitis include throwing, weight lifting, gardening, painting, tile setting etc. Individuals in the habit of lying on side at night or kneeling at work are at risk of developing this condition.

Some of the common treatment options suggested for bursitis include the following:

  2. Medications to reduce inflammation and pain

Some patients may require more aggressive treatments depending on the severity of condition including the following:

  • Physical therapy

As already discussed, bursitis is caused by overuse. Another cause is sudden change in activity level such as intense training for a competition or marathon. An increase in body weight can also be another reason.

Some of the other causes of this condition include:

  • Pain that can be felt during movement and rest
  • Many patients also complain of pain that spreads to nearby areas

Diagnosing Bursitis

In most cases, doctors will assess medical history of patient and perform a physical exam for proper diagnosis. The exam is done for checking any swelling or inflammation around the joints and areas leading to discomfort and pain.

In some cases, doctor may recommend other tests to diagnose bursitis. Some of these may include:

  • Imaging tests

The tests help understand the causes of pain. Some lab tests also help assess fluid from the inflamed bursae. It can evaluate cause of joint inflammation.
